For MP TOURS’ Founder, Paula Stanghetta, the Marche is home. It is the region where her paternal family originated, until survival meant immigration to Canada over 100 years ago. It is the region of culinary and ancestral traditions that continues to beckon MP TOURS back time and again, and to share it with travellers ready for an Italy rarely seen elsewhere in the country.
Marche (MAR-kay) is plural for marca (march), which refers to the medieval military March of Ancona and marches of Camerino and Fermo. The region is located in Central Italy, about a 2 hour drive south of Venice.
From the mountains, to the seaside, to the quaint towns and villages, the Marche is a region untouched by mass tourism. Perhaps the natural topography – very hilly and mountainous inland – has something to do with keeping crowds away. However, beyond the majestic mountains, the spectacular coast emerges and the seaside life beckons.
Our Marche tour, entitled Pearl of the Adriatic, is designed for travellers who want to:
- Learn how to prepare local regional food from a Master Chef and their team
- Explore charming medieval towns with their hidden histories
- Visit vineyards (cantine) to learn about and sample local wine-making traditions
- Meet local olive oil producers and taste their exquisite golden nectar
- Relax on the Adriatic seaside, while mingling with the locals in their shops and restaurants
