Why travel to Pesaro? Say “Italy” and people immediately think of Rome, Florence, Venice – three of the most incredible cities in the world. Say Italy again and people respond with Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre and Milan. Rarely do people say Pesaro and that’s no surprise. In fact, when asked our destination in Italy, we were greeted with puzzling and questioning looks when we said Pesaro. It actually made us wonder, “Why travel to Pesaro?”. It took no more than a day in this beautiful city on the central Adriatic seaside to answer that question and erase all doubt about why we are here. Let me share some of the secrets of this Pearl of the Adriatic.
About Pesaro
Pesaro is a city of about 90,000 inhabitants located approximately three hours south of Venice. While the seaside is enough to attract travellers, the city is surrounded by a stunning countryside, with undulating hills, vineyards and outstanding trails for hiking, biking and motorcycle enthusiasts. Not to mention, it’s the home of motorcycle manufacturer Benelli, and where professional racer Valentino Rossi is the pride of Pesaro… – need I say more?
Culture
For music lovers, it is the birthplace of Gioachino Antonio Rossini, a prolific and talented composer who wrote 39 operas as well as sacred music, chamber music, and hundreds of songs. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Barber of Seville or the William Tell Overture – two of his famous works? Rossini’s influence on the performing arts is evident today in the annual Rossini Opera Festival, which occurs every August, in the internationally recognized Rossini Conservatory, and in countless tributes Pesaro makes to its famous composer.
Food
For foodies, Pesaro will always impress – with its succulent seafood treasures such as the traditional pesce azzurro (blue fish), with its signature piadena brimming with fresh rucola, salsicchia, and mozzarella, and of course gelato and sorbetto to satisfy every palate.
Location
The city is walkable and safe. From our seaside hotel, to the historic centre it is a mere 10 minute stroll to cobblestone streets and the grand piazza. And speaking of history, Pesaro is no lightweight. Our first tour with Sylvia opened our eyes to historical artifacts and stories dating back to Roman times. Whether art, political, religious or architectural history, Pesaro is a gem waiting to be discovered.
People
Probably the most attractive aspect of Pesaro is its people, and although it may sound cliché, it really is true. People here are friendly, helpful, gentle and ready to laugh with us. They remember us when we return – for we have, and they call us by name. We feel like family and that is a feeling we enjoy!
Why Travel to Pesaro? Why Not?!
So now when asked Why travel to Pesaro, Italy? our enthusiastic response will always be Why Not Pesaro?!
